Yes, Homebuyers Are Interested In Sustainability

One of the things I like about being a Realtor is helping people make more sustainable decisions when it comes to homeownership. But it’s not just solar panels and rain barrels. Just as businesses have realized, sustainable choices go straight to the bottom line. When I speak to clients about sustainability and greening homes I usually start with cost savings.

Often it’s the low-hanging fruit we forget about. Fittingly, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) latest sustainability report reinforced some of that. Commute times, energy efficiency and proximity to green space all charted well. Those pieces also reinforce the ever-present mantra of real estate — location, location, location! And guess what? If you’re closer to neighborhood centers and green spaces, you’re more likely to walk or bike. That helps all of us by reducing emissions from commuting — perhaps as much as sixty-seven per cent according to Oxford Researchers.

NAR’s vice president of demographics and behavioral insights, Jessica Lautz, commented on the findings.

“As many families are currently spending more time at home, some are taking on improvement projects involving sustainable features. Some buyers are also deciding to purchase homes with environmentally friendly components. In both instances, these households look to either reduce utility costs or increase personal comfort within their home.” Don’t overlook sustainable solutions when you’re buying or selling. You’re leaving money on the table.
